1000 DAYS FOR A LIFETIME OF HEALTH

Half of all Malawian children are malnourished and at risk of irreversible stunting and wasting by their fifth birthday.

Research has shown that the first 1000 days (from pregnancy until their second birthday) are a critical time for a child’s development. Poor nutrition in these early years leads to permanent effects like stunting. Yet the right nutrition makes an infant ten times more likely to overcome childhood diseases, helps them have better health in later life, achieve more at school and bring up healthier families of their own.

Helping an infant get a good, balanced diet before their second birthday is one of the most effective ways we can help their long term wellbeing.

For just £10 per month for two years, you can become a 1000 Days Sponsor and give an infant in Malawi the right start for a lifetime of health.

We’ll send you an update of your sponsor child and their family when they’re 6, 12, 18 and 24 months old including some photos.

You’ll see the difference you’re making to a child's life over two years.

Pregnancy Twinning is perfectly placed to tackle malnutrition

Through Pregnancy Twinning, our Mother Buddies get to know pregnant women and newborns living in remote places.

Food insecurity rocked Malawi in 2016, and they started to notice that some babies born safely through Pregnancy Twinning were becoming underweight.

We realised that our Mother Buddies are perfectly placed to monitor, advise and provide nutritional help to infants and their families during the crucial first 1000 days of life – preventing the long term effects of malnutrition.

How does my sponsorship help?

"There has been a tremendous improvement in our health. We have always had these foods like soya, maize and beans but we never knew that they could improve our health. The secret here is knowledge…”

Sponsoring a child allows our Mother Buddies to make extra visits to Pregnancy Twinning mums until their new child is two years old. The programme gives families and their wider community nutrition advice and practical help like:

  • Recipes and educating families to provide their child with a balanced diet of the Main, Grow, Go and Glow foods – during pregnancy and afterwards
  • Breastfeeding support for 6 months, followed by advice on how to transition to solid food
  • Providing farm inputs to the family as needed, like goats, chickens or seeds
  • Tracking the infant’s nutrition by measuring mid-upper arm circumference and referring any at-risk infant to a UN feeding programme.

Sponsor funds are pooled to ensure that all children benefit in a community – your sponsored child is representative of a wider story about how their community is being supported by Mother Buddies who are carrying out these interventions.

About being a 1000 Days Sponsor

Soon! In the future, everyone who twins a pregnancy will also get the opportunity to support the new infant for their first two years of life.

Right now we’re starting small with our first nutrition-trained Mother Buddies and a new group of mothers and babies – making sure that each infant sponsored through 1000 days gets the full 1000 days of care.

When you click to donate, a NowDonate page will load with 1000 Days Sponsor option selected. You do not need to create an account – just continue through the donation process and within a few minutes using either Paypal or Stripe you will have a direct debit set up for £10 a month to Chasing Zero (the charity that operates Pregnancy Twinning, UK registered charity number 1144344).

The first sponsorship donation will come out immediately and will then be drawn monthly until your sponsor child turns two years old.

You’ll receive a confirmation receipt from NowDonate straight away and we’ll send you a thank you email, followed with details of your 1000 days sponsor child in a separate email.

You’ll get an update of your sponsored infant and their family at 6, 12, 18 and 24 months old.

At the moment sponsorship starts after mum has been supported by Pregnancy Twinning. So all our infants get a full 1000 days of care, but your donations only start after childbirth.

In future you’ll be able to sponsor all the way from the womb until two years in the world.

Researchers have compiled evidence for years on the benefits of getting these first 1000 days right.

As the case for the importance of infant nutrition grew, more resources were created which could be used with the women we worked with. Such as the video below which forms part of our nutrition education programme

We then worked with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to construct a programme that effectively meets the need in Malawi, where half of all children are permanently stunted by age 5. What’s more, we’ve already trialled this and it works! There was a 40% improvement in nutrition in our families in Malawi in eating a balanced diet and 3 meals a day.
